6 Books I Read In 2017 That Are Worth Your Time

books I read in 2017If you’ve been following me for a long time you know I have a very Hungry Mind. On top of magazines, articles and reports, I read at least 1 book per month; and have gone up to 4 in years past. This year I read 15 books in all, lighter than before but interesting nonetheless.

I like to read about everything, and this year was no different. Here are 6 books I read in 2017 which I recommend you do too:

Algorithms to Live By: The Computer Science of Human Decisions

This is a practical and useful guide that shows how algorithms have much more to do with day-to-day life than you might think. And not just that; they can also lead to a better life by helping you solve problems, make decisions and get more things done.

A must read for those who want to understand what algorithms are and how they work behind the scenes.

The Body Builders: Inside The Science of The Engineered Human

This is a book I was really excited about to read because it’s about changing possibilities for people. And as someone who’s a bit of a skeptic with regards to trans-humanism, this book changed my perspective. Scientists are pushing us beyond our natural limitations by uniting machine and human, hacking our genetic codes, and understanding the body’s molecular structure through engineering principles.

Our reality is changing, so a book like The Body Builders is a chance to reflect on what is possible, what is coming, and then ask the ultimate question: what will it mean to be human?

Ghost Fleet

This is a novel of the next world war, written by P.W. Singer and August Cole, which shows how the next world conflict will look like. The book portrays a scenario in which China is able to launch a technologically-sophisticated attack against the United States, leading to the occupation of Hawaii.

It’s a techno-thriller in the near future with the latest technologies put to use; it’s so good that it’s a must read in the Pentagon.

Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind

I finally got to read this one at the beginning of the year. Sapiens traces the evolution of our species, from the rise of our mot ancient ancestors to our current place in the modern, technological age. How have we managed to completely dominate the entire planet?

It’s a book that shows you the developments and trends that have allowed Homo Sapiens to rise to the top. Read it if you want to know how humans ended up living in a capitalist world community.

How To Create A Mind: The Secret of Human Thought Revealed

Similar to Sapiens, I finally got around to this one. Written by Ray Kurzweil, it offers an intimate examination of the nuts and bolts behind how the brain works. Once we understand exactly how people think, perceive the world and decide to take action, the creation of true artificial intelligence seems a possibility that’s just around the corner.

The Undoing Project: A Friendship That Changed Our Minds

It tells the story of how behavioral economics came to be and the two famed Israeli psychologists behind it: Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky. They did groundbreaking research that led to improved understanding of how we make decisions. Although their personalities were total opposites, they found themselves enthralled with one another, and collaborated closely for fifteen years.

This is a story of innovation!
