The digital procurement portal for the public sector

Launched in 2012, the G Cloud Framework is a multi-supplier vehicle for the purchase of cloud-based IT Services by Central Government and the wider public sector.  Developed to streamline the procurement of external digital services, it’s the only portal through which UK public sector bodies can access commercially available software and services.

Key differences between G Cloud 8 and G Cloud 9

Wide ranging changes have been made to the G Cloud framework since its last iteration (G8). The most significant changes have been new requirements for vendors to make their data security practices clearer.

Announcing the company’s selection as a G9 supplier, Peter Hoyland indicated that the change reflected trends in the wider cloud technology market. He described the move as a welcome addition to the already rigorous G Cloud application process.

“In a period where we’ve seen global cyber attacks affect software infrastructure in both the public and private sectors, it’s good to see that technology services being procured through G9 are aligned to the cloud security principles of both the Government Digital Service (GDS), and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).”

Jake Langford, Head of Support at Bubble, added “The infrastructure surrounding our PPM software is already ISO27001 compliant. The G Cloud information security announcement in February however was one of several reasons Bubble moved to achieve ISO27001 status for the whole business before the end of Q2 in 2017”.

Other changes to the digital marketplace

The G9 framework also benefits from an extension to three ‘lots’ for digital service listings, which help clarify differences between software provision and software support. Bubble applied to provide Cloud Software and Cloud Support services, and successfully achieved both. A third lot, Cloud Hosting, exists for technology infrastructure providers.

Clarifications to the categorisation of services have also been implemented in G Cloud 9. The intention is to make it significantly easier for public sector users to create a shortlist of vendors who can meet their exact requirements.
