Being a good innovator is not enough

Jeffrey Phillips

I think there are few firms that were more innovative than Intel. Notice that I'm using the past tense. Intel, lead by an excellent leader in Andy Grove, had a passion for being the best. Grove's focus - "only the paranoid survive" kept Intel as an industry leader and innovator. When I was younger, working for Texas Instruments, Intel seemed to constantly reinvent the computing industry.

Is clever the new sexy?

IdeaSpies

Most of us are drawn to people who improve our lives. Humans are different from animals in that sexy to us is in the mind as much as in reacting instinctively. Clever is a compelling trait, and more than intelligence – it’s being able to use your smarts to see how to improve yourself, another person, or a situation. Clever is being quick to get the point or to see a problem or issue from a different vantage point.

Peak Performance: Continuous Testing & Evaluation of LLM-Based Applications

Speaker: Aarushi Kansal, AI Leader & Author and Tony Karrer, Founder & CTO at Aggregage

Software leaders who are building applications based on Large Language Models (LLMs) often find it a challenge to achieve reliability. It’s no surprise given the non-deterministic nature of LLMs. To effectively create reliable LLM-based (often with RAG) applications, extensive testing and evaluation processes are crucial. This often ends up involving meticulous adjustments to prompts.

Creative Quickies – What Innovation Strategy Superpower Do You Wield?

BrainZooming

Wikipedia describes a superpower as a “fictional superhuman ability.” But what if the superpower weren’t fictional, at least when it comes to your ability to envision and implement an innovation strategy ? If you actually had an innovation strategy superpower, which one would you want to wield? For me, I’d want my go-to innovation superpower to be a protective shield against hearing any ill-founded “no” standing in the way of doing new things.

Being There Where and When Wanted

IdeaSpies

It’s one thing to have a clever idea, but the world probably won’t notice unless it’s at the right place at the right time. The ultimate cleverness is being there where and when wanted. One example is the umbrella street vendors in Manhattan who appear only when it’s raining. I spied this display of car deodorizers was only 10% of the variants on this clever idea in the waiting lobby of the Riverhead car wash.

Intel Disrupted: Why large companies find it difficult to innovate, and what they can do about it

Steve Blank

In the 21 st century it’s harder for large corporations to create disruptive breakthroughs. Disruptive innovations are coming from startups – Telsa for automobiles, Uber for taxis, Airbnb for hotel rentals, Netflix for video rentals and Facebook for media. What’s holding large companies back? Here are four reasons: First, companies bought into the false premise that they exist to maximize shareholder value – which said “keep the stock price high.

Listen to the Music of your Life

IdeaSpies

Watching for clever ideas as you move around your world is important, but so is listening for clever ideas. At least a third of us learn best through hearing, but everyone can attend to sounds. To quote the entertainer I hear on the subway today, “Our lives are songs, so enjoy the music.” Western education doesn’t emphasize listening skills. It’s “Reading, Writing, and ‘Ritmatic,” but nothing about how to be attentive to what you hear.

Dealing with complexity

IdeaSpies

Our world and our lives are complex and seem to grow more so every hour. How can you better deal with complexity and even prosper? I believe if you change the way you observe the complexity you encounter, you can. Complexity brings bigger, more knotty problems. First step is to describe the big problem and then break it down into smaller problems. Once you’re pulled out the threads of smaller problems you can brainstorm solutions to the ones that have immediate answers.

How Mature Companies Are Scaling Transformational New Businesses

Scaling transformational innovations in large companies is challenging due to ‘Company Fit’ issues, which arise when the resources, processes, and priorities (RPPs) of the core business are not aligned with the needs of the new business. Many companies have learned how ambidexterity—the ability to both ‘exploit the present and explore the future,’ can help them address these issues for ideation and incubation of new innovations, but scaling transformative business innovations remains a challenge
