Some wearable devices have caught on (FitBit, Apple Watch) while others have lagged behind or been completely written off (Google Glass). For a smart technology to work it has to be socially acceptable and fashionable in addition to smart. Which is where smart nails could come in since millions of people already get regular manicures. But these are no ordinary manicures we’re taking about. Instead tiny chips would get placed directly onto your nail to enable you to communicate with sensors.
As Trend Hunter puts it:
“Within Dubai’s World Trade Centre, the Lanour Beauty Lounge offers smart nail manicures that let customers get NFC chips attached to their fingernails. These smart manicures make it possible for clients to store personal data within the NFC chips and work with NFC-enabled devices.
The manicure involves placing the chip on a fingernail and covering it with nail polish, so that people are able to share contact details or easily direct others to their social media profiles. Looking to the future, there is the potential for the technology to advance enough so that people can pay for bills or share menus and other information once the amount of data that can be stored on the small NFC chips increases.”
I can even see people using this method in lieu of exchanging business cards. Just one question though: does this mean men will have to start painting their nails too?!
