Right now we’re all stressed, fed up, and burnt out. What we should be doing is taking care of our mental health but ironically that is often the farthest thing from our minds. Until now that is. Thanks to a new company known as MindLabs that wants to become the Peloton of Mental Health.
TechCrunch explains how that will happen: “Its platform will launch next year, first with a mobile app that combines live videos from mental health professionals who lead meditation and mindfulness sessions, and features to help users track their stress levels. The full platform will also include an EEG headband, called ‘Halo,’ that measures signals, like heart and respiration rates, that can help show users how effective their sessions are.”
MindLabs reminds me of an idea I had all the way back in 2013 (Snap Into A Stim Gym) for a workout facility that would be geared towards mental stimulation. Here’s what I had to say about it at the time:
“Why is it that we care more about the beautification of our bodies than we do the modification of our minds? Why can’t we go somewhere to get a cardio workout and a mental workout at the same time?
I think it would be great if such a place existed. If there was a whole gym or even just a section in a gym dedicated to working out your mind. A place where instead of adding mass doing sets you could just sit on your ass taking IQ tests. A place where instead of a bench press there was a timed puzzle that challenged your ability to manage stress. A place where instead of working on your definition you could look up definitions. A place where instead of circuit training with machines laid out in a path there were several tables set up for you to do math. A place where instead of lifting a weight you could go contemplate your fate. A place where you could spend more time with egg heads than meat heads.”
MindLabs isn’t quite what I had in mind but the focus on mental health in addition to physical health is certainly a step in the right direction. No matter how busy we get we can’t forget to take care of ourselves, from top to bottom, from head to toes. And that effort starts with managing our stress levels and state of mind. Something that MindLabs can certainly help with.
