In this section of our “Knowers and Learners” workshop, Dan Seewald explains the different mindsets that separates these types of thinkers.

According to Seewald, the situations people encounter shape the way they view the world, forming streams of recognition. Overtime, these patterns allow people to pull from previous experiences and make decisions faster. However, he says that over-relying on patterns can lead to cognitive biases.

“When we’re experts we get really good at explaining away and not re-evaluating, and learning,” Seewald says. “This is the foundation of the…knower’s mindset.”

Seewald is the founder of Deliberate Innovation, an innovation consulting firm. He is also the former Head of Innovation at the biopharmaceutical company Pfizer.
