Step Off the Cliff

I was sitting with our team yesterday, talking about a project that launches next week.

The project is huge, and we’ve been working on getting it off the ground for nearly a year. Our feelings were a mix of excitement and fear.

And that’s when I remembered – any project worth doing has the Wile E. Coyote moment – when you realise that you’ve stepped over the edge of the cliff.

The thing with Wile E. Coyote is that this moment always seems like a disaster. And yet, the very next thing we see is his next scheme to catch the roadrunner in action.

That’s the way innovation works. Step off the cliff, crash, learn, get better, and then step off the cliff again.

Eventually we learn how to build a plane on the way down.
