According to research by the Gartner Group, there will be more than 20 billion connected devices in use by the year 2020.

That is a massive multi-billion euro opportunity that could result in breakthrough innovations in all sorts of areas, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed in Europe.

There, bIoTope (Building an IoT OPen innovation Ecosystem for connected smart objects) is paving the way for new open innovation ecosystems, where companies can innovate (with minimal financial outlay) Systems-of-Systems platforms for connected devices for smart objects.

Key Open Innovation Objectives

The overall objectives of this European Union-funded initiative is to create new products and services, change how services are sold and consumed and reduce costs for societies.  This will involve new forms of co-creation of services and the sharing of lots of big data, which will be available free of charge.

The open innovation project is hoping to make a big impact by:

  • Building lots of opportunities for small businesses
  • Renew public services
  • Reuse resources
  • Engage communities
  • And much more

During the course of the project, many smart city proof-of-concept pilots will be set up in three areas – Helsinki in Finland, Grand Lyon in France and the Brussels Region. To engage the local developer communities in these places, open calls will be organized from June to December 2017, and published on bIoTope’s website.

Submissions will have to be in by the beginning of August, and the announcement of which projects will be funded will be made in October.
