Open Innovation: A 2014 Research Agenda

Open Innovation

One of the main goals of the Chesbrough/Vanhaverbeke/West 2006 book was to shape the research agenda of the open innovation. Our final chapter was immodestly entitled “Open innovation: a research agenda” (West, Vanhaverbeke and Chesbrough, 2006). Since I'm trying to write a short encyclopedia article on open innovation — and want to make it different from my 2011 article — it seemed a good time to review what’s been written recently.

David Gram, Head of Marketing at Lego’s Future Lab, said, “We only develop the few key features that are really needed. We throw it into the market and get feedback from consumers.”. As recently as 2011 90% of Lego’s users were boys.

Networks, Communities, Ecosystems and Platforms

Open Innovation

Maybe I’m getting crotchety in my old age, but it seems like there’s some sloppiness in the use of these terms by innovation scholars. Two-Sided Markets are not Platforms Van Alstyne and West I started my trip at the Marshall Van Alstyne and Geoff Parker conference at Boston University, which they dub the Platform Strategy Research Symposium. All of these are two-sided markets: Microsoft convinces gamers and game writers to join the platforms.

Typology for Innovative Organizations

Open Innovation EU

They require openness, transparency, adaptability, co-creation, self-management and responsiveness. While searching for a modern-day typology for innovative organizations – to show our students and what kind of context they most likely would want to work – I found that none was there, so I created a new one. A Typology for Innovative Organizations. The model describes organizational typologies based on cultures of innovation. 2011). 2011).

Learning User Innovation by teaching it

Open Innovation

This month I spend part of my innovation strategy class at UCI on user innovation. Thoughts in 2014 With more than 15 published papers (articles or chapters) about open innovation, I’m guessing many know me mostly for my OI work. Of these articles, two articles in 2009 and 2012 compare open and user innovation, the latter with Marcel Bogers (who did his diss at EPFL on UI). I wrote it with Frank Piller, one of Europe’s best known open innovation scholars.

Warm and Fuzzy at the Front End of Innovation

Paul Hobcraft

Perhaps I have fallen into the very trap I have campaigned about in the past, in recognizing and resolving the disappointing results we achieve from all the work we put into the front end of innovation. The “warm and fuzzy” front end of innovation can make us all a little grumpy. I recently wrote out a newsletter – termed a thought or two – to my innovation network. The subject was the changes occurring at the front end of innovation.

Case Studies: Learning from Failure, or Dying from it

Qmarkets

We frequently talk about how innovation is a crucial necessity for your enterprise company, and how the right innovation can be the difference between setting the market standards and being shunted aside as a new market leader makes the rules. We also frequently hear about the great innovation successes: Tesla, SpaceX, Uber, Amazon, and even the classic innovation failures, like Kodak and Nokia, who saw incoming disruptive innovation but didn't do anything to face it.
