Open Innovation for Clean Water

December 8, 2017 By IdeaConnection

One of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals is a call to action to provide universal access to clean water and sanitation by 2030.  Achieving it will take the efforts and ingenuity of many different players.

Two of those hoping to make a difference are global biotechnology giant Novozymes and Grundfos, a world leader in advanced pump technologies.  They have formed an open innovation collaboration to tackle this pressing issue.

The two organizations have posted four challenges on HelloScience, an open innovation platform started by Novozymes that encourages innovators to collaborate to solve the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

“Until now, we have been able to connect the startups and academics, who are part of this network, with our knowledge about enzymes and microorganisms, and allowing them to use samples in their work, but now we can also connect them with Grundfos’ expertise in water treatment,” said Claus Crone Fuglsang, Senior Vice President, Research & Technology at Novozymes.

The four challenges are:

From Foul to Flow – a search for new cost-effective and environmentally friendly ways to remove the biofilm that is formed by microorganisms.

Taking the Drudge out of Sludge – looking for solutions that will create less sludge to be disposed of, reduce sludge management costs and convert sludge into a renewable resource.

Those Phosphates aren’t Coming Back – looking for ways to recover phosphates in wastewater and use the phosphoric acid salts to grow food.

Clean Water and Sanitation for All – a search for innovative ways to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
