There’s a lot going on right now. Trump’s second impeachment trial, the latest TikTok dance craze, memes spreading faster than the coronavirus. Someone even had to declare the other day that they weren’t a cat. Who has time to keep up with it all? What we need is a RedZone channel for news. A service that shows us the relevant highlights of the day’s events so that we can avoid watching C-SPAN and scrolling social media feeds 24/7.
This service could take the form of an email newsletter, Substack, Twitter feed, or even a real TV channel. Something. Anything. Just a coherent way to highlight the relevant news and funny moments from that day’s events. The way that MTV’s Ridiculousness or Comedy Central’s Tosh.O captures the best of YouTube and the web.
For instance, this aggregator could have shown us the harrowing video of the January 6th attack on the Capitol that got presented during the impeachment trail. Or the lowlights of Trump’s lawyer’s horrible attempt at an opening statement. Or what happened with that cat filter. Or Elon Musk agreeing to a Clubhouse chat with Kanye West. Or the footage of Eugene Goodman saving Mitt Romney. Or Gina Carano getting kicked out of Star Wars. The list goes on and on…
Since we’re combining real news with silly memes, random tweets, celebrity gossip and the like a regular evening newscast won’t suffice. This isn’t just about staying informed with the day’s news. It’s about staying informed with the day’s happenings. With all the buzz, hype, and proverbial water cooler talk proliferating around the world and the inter-webs at breakneck speed.
It’s long been suggested that the next Google would be the company that could figure out how to make sense of all the data that we generate on a daily basis. Make sense of this daily deluge of information that we are drowning in. Search engines no longer suffice. We need analysis. A way to find and circulate the best content. Perhaps a RedZone channel for news is the way we do that.
