I’m currently binge-watching Sons of Anarchy, a show about a motorcycle club in Southern California that’s mixed up in all sorts of criminal behavior. Watching the show has inspired me to start a club of my own. Albeit a club with a vastly different purpose than the one depicted on the show.
Instead of the Sons of Anarchy this would be the Sons of Destiny. Instead of selling guns, hauling drugs, running a pornography studio, and murdering rival gang members we’d host social events, undertake community service, and get together to discuss science, technology, and the future. Riding a motorcycle would be encouraged but not required.
The Sons of Destiny would be like one of those American Legion Posts or Elk Lodge fraternal orders but with a nerdy twist. A place for people to get together and discuss the latest innovations or just play board games with friends. Guest speakers could get brought on. Open mic nights could be hosted. Through it all an intellectual hot spot would ferment. Like the old coffee houses in Vienna where the greatest minds of the time would get together to discuss new ideas and debate current events.
Eventually these nerdy hangout spots could grow to become full-fledged organizations that establish co-working spaces, tool libraries, and other resource rich environments that assist people with their projects. Members could even pool together their financial resources to make investments, eventually getting to the point where they launch their very own venture capital firm that provides seed money to launch new businesses.
In fact, there’s no shortage of possible activities for this intellectual social club to participate in. Such as:
- Hosting open mic nights; create event space that anyone can rent out
- Bringing in guest speakers
- Meditation retreats
- Investment club
- Hiking club
- Astronomy club
- Book club
- Social activities
- Host TED X events
- Host innovation conferences
- Create a YouTube channel
- Distribute a newsletter
- Futurist consulting
- Create tool libraries/DIY workshops/co-working spaces
- Establish youth ambassador program
- Offer adult continuing education courses
That’s why I especially like the name Sons of Destiny since the acronym SOD has a double meaning to it since we’d be sodding the future i.e. laying down the foundation, shaping the world in our own image.
Over time I could even see these clubs becoming so successful that spin-off charters start popping up all over the world, in every major city and every small town. Anywhere and everywhere that like-minded, scientifically inclined, technology enthusiasts want to get together, shoot the shit, and make the world a better place.
Of course, the Sons of Anarchy probably get more girls and have more fun but let me ask you this….when it comes down to it, when push comes to shove, which club would you rather be a part of?!
