I am a die-hard baseball fan. Borderline obsessed. I literally moved to Arizona to be closer to Spring Training. And I am adamant about one key point: under no circumstances, in any shape or form, should there be a major league baseball season this year.
It’s asinine. Playing just 60 games at a time when the pandemic is getting worse, not better, makes no sense whatsoever. Players, coaches, and team personnel get could sick and have their careers shortened. Or worse someone could wind up dying. And for what? The entire labor dispute between players and owners that caused irreparable damage to the sport could have and should have been avoided if the season would have just been canceled in the first place. Instead we’re going to have anti-climatic shortened season that may not even get completed and may take place without several players who may choose to opt out. It’s absurd.
The NBA isn’t any better. They delayed their entire season when one player, Rudy Gobert, tested positive. Now when 16 out of 302 players test positive they are still moving ahead with plans to restart the season inside of a bubble in Disney World. How did we go from stopping the season out of an abundance of caution over one person to starting up again anyway despite news of 16 positive cases?! Where is the logic in that?
Of course, there isn’t any logic. People who knew the benefits of wearing masks still can’t bring themselves to do it. And others flat out deny the science in the first place. We’re living in the movie Idiocracy, getting stupider and stupider by the minute, with no end in sight. I knew that people were going stir crazy but I didn’t think that meant that we were literally going crazy.
Just take a look at the new Circa hotel and casino set to open up in October in Las Vegas. That’s right. October 2020. I get that they are excited to open. The place features the largest sports book in the world and an insane multi-tiered pool amphitheater that would let you watch sports outside in style. The place looks epic. But they do realize that we’re in the middle of a pandemic and that there aren’t any sports to bet on?! What the actual fuck.
I really don’t understand why they would even be allowed to open?! Why is anything allowed to open? Why is New York re-opening after flattening the curve?! I get that the risk has been slightly lowered there but that’s still a huge mistake! Another outbreak could still happen at a moment’s notice. It’s not re-safe to open anything, go anywhere, do anything, until we have a vaccine which we may not have until 2021 at the earliest and even then it may not last long.
I get that places are feeling the financial strains of the quarantine and feel some pressure to re-open or face foreclosure. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. But sport leagues run by billionaire owners and performed by millionaire athletes can afford not to play. They aren’t going to go out of business anytime soon.
Of course it doesn’t help that we are led by an ignorant, corrupt government that flat out doesn’t care about its own people. But worse, I get the feeling that the American people don’t care about the American people either. More people have died than in World War I or the Vietnam War. This used to be cause for outrage. But not anymore. Where is our sense of urgency? Where is our national mourning for those we’ve lost? When do we draw the line? When we’ve lost 150,000 people? 200,000? A million? It’s absurd. We’ve just accepted our fate. Accepted the fact that we’re no match for the virus. That it is what it is. A natural disaster that we are powerless to stop even though we’re not. There are things we could be doing. Wearing masks. Social distancing. Quarantining. But we got bored with doing that. After only two months. And so we gave up. Pathetic.
Since we can’t help ourselves what we really need is someone who is going to step up and remove our options for us. Cancel everything. Baseball. Basketball. Football. Tennis. Everything. Every sport. Every casino. Every bar. Shut it the fuck down. Indefinitely. The ultimate cancel culture moment: the cancellation of society.
I would do it but who am I? Just some baseball die-hard, stuck in his apartment, afraid to go outside. I doubt anyone would listen to me. But if anyone is listening then hear me loud and clear: cancel everything! Before it’s too late. Before more lives are lost. That is, if you even care about that sort of thing anymore.
Canceling everything is the Greatest Idea Ever.
