The Power of Collaboration

Boxes and Arrows

This effort was an interesting challenge since it involved me—a non-Aboriginal designer—trying to design for Aboriginal students from multiple cultural backgrounds. While navigating the expected cross-cultural design issues, I met some wonderful people and learned a great deal about the importance of letting those with whom you design guide the research and design process. My final project was a prototype design that I then tested in paper form.

Concocting, imagining, inventing, constructing and designing are all part of the innovation journey. Clearly there is not one way to the path of effective innovation, but there are tools and methods that have been proven to drive significant value in the approach to designing innovation. Service Design focuses on efficiency by designing out waste. Studies indicate that 30-70% of internal costs stem from failure demand i.e. what happens when the service goes wrong.

Checking for the global pulse of innovation

Paul Hobcraft

This allows for greater potential in public and private collaborations as dealing across ministries was always a significant barrier, that seems to be finally addressed. As a report, the 2019 Global Innovation Index (GII) is a whopper, at 450 pages, although 50% of this is detailed economic profiles and data tables for each country within the index. This GII report investigates and reports on 129 countries and then analyzes and ranks them accordingly.

Can We Have One of These? A Product Innovation Platform

Paul Hobcraft

So as I read about the solution that Aras provides to the designers within Manufacturing to manage PLM complex systems and products, you have to wonder why this cannot be extended into all innovation’s management. Of course what “sits” on the platform will be different but it has much that can adapted and aligned in the principles of any design. The whole momentum of collaboration becomes accelerated. The design outcomes we need to determine.

The Need for Digital Innovation Platforms

Paul Hobcraft

We are seeing many digitally aware organizations like Apple, Amazon, Salesforce all recognizing their future innovation is reliant on innovation and digital to be tied at the hip, wedded together in a design that builds towards satisfying customer needs. We need to think this new digital innovation structure to have both internal disciplines in solutions but also designed for extended enterprise collaborations so “ecosystems of innovations” can finally take hold.

Building the Single Innovation Digital Platform Environment

Paul Hobcraft

We need a radical design, universal in design and approach. What we should finally accept, a platform connects all users, both internally and externally in their ability to share their knowledge and information in exchanges, in one environment to cultivate collaborations and continuous collaborative creativity. The more we design and need to deliver smart, connected and innovative products the more we have this innovation platform need.

The Future of Corporate-Startup Collaboration

The Inovo Group

Collaboration can no longer be viewed as an optional extra, it’s a strategic imperative. The collaboration between large corporations and startups is more important today than ever, and the trend will continue. New software technologies and tools will make it possible to create Startup Collaboration Platforms that enable the relationships to become more automated, structured and efficient. Slack and Humanyze are companies that have nascent social collaboration capabilities.

The problem of scaling can confuse those innovating.

Paul Hobcraft

The changes we are undergoing around a new strategy design play towards innovation outcomes. Any plan of future actions needs to be designed in different ways. We are attempting to scale out, often on a current path of decline, or organizational design; one that is too rigid, static and we chose to ignore many warning signals as the understanding is not well connected up. We can design production, facilities and a host of other things through digital twins.

They reaffirm that innovation is not the priority it should be at board level, both offer a devastating reality of poor innovation processes and structures and a lack of corporate design for salvaging innovation out of its current mire of incremental, ad hoc and risk constraints due to this lack of top focus. Making Big, Bold Assertions to Drive Design Strategy

Innovation in Practice

Design strategy is built on assertion. On the way to a great design strategy is the creation of a series of value assertions: driving statements that guide creative exploration and describe our commitment to our customers. A value assertion for a digital collaboration company might be, “We promise to help our customers feel a sense of physical community while working remotely from one-another.” I run a design strategy company called Modernist Studio. Focusing on Innovation for our Energy Transition we are all undertaking

Paul Hobcraft

Technological and systemic innovation is incredibly important to the end-user sectors of transport, industry, and buildings, as well as replacing and upgrading much of the overall system design and operation to generate increased electrification. Any energy transition takes a long time, and it requires a highly collaborative and multidisciplinary approach. Images and Metaphors — Finding the Right Agile Organization Design. Mid–sized and larger organizations often struggle immensely with finding an organization design that allows them to grow and stay agile at the same time. The current business literature and case studies often stress the novelty (self–organization) and downplay the familiar (structure). Here are some factors to consider: There is not just one single agile organization design.

Design patterns are generally considered a good thing, but do they actually help run a user experience group? As a user experience group manager and an observer (and sponsor) of design pattern exercises, I’ve come to have serious questions about their actual utility. It’s not that design pattern libraries are bad, but that in a world of limited resources, it is it is not clear that the investment is worth it. Design Patterns take a lot of investment.

The Distant Summit of Enterprise Design

As I sat down to write this review, I found the mountain climbing as a metaphor for enterprise design sticking with me. On page 183, the author seems to reveal the why of what we’re reading: “The intent of the Enterprise Design approach is to capture the enterprise in both design context and subject in a holistic fashion.
