Considering how reticent people have been to wear masks they’re probably not going to like the idea of implanting a sensor underneath their skin that would be capable of monitoring their health. But if they are it could help them find out that they have the flu or other infectious diseases up to three weeks before any symptoms show up!
Such an early warning system could be invaluable in the fight against global pandemics since current testing methods typically take way too long to determine if we are sick or not. By monitoring the amount of oxygen in our tissue we could change that.
But how does it work?!
According to Mashable:
“The company’s Lumee Oxygen Platform monitors tissue oxygen levels through a subdermal sensor. That’s then paired with a data probe adhered to the skin above the sensor, which transmits information to a smartphone or other devices.
Fluctuations in tissue oxygen level could indicate that a person is getting sick before they know it themselves. The aim of the study is to develop an algorithmic early detection system that can translate biological changes into preventative healthcare.
‘The Lumee Oxygen Platform can potentially function as a sort of canary in a coal mine for infectious disease, since subtle changes in oxygen at the tissue level may signal trouble and can help clinicians course correct quickly to avoid outbreaks,’ Ben Hwang, the chairman and CEO of Profusa, said in the company’s statement.
And you won’t have to worry about the government using this sensor to track you (even if DARPA is involved in the project). That’s because the embedded sensor itself is completely harmless. It only works when paired with another component above the skin that can read the data. So what are we waiting for?! Let’s start implementing this early warning system before it’s too late.
Is the Lumee Oxygen Platform the Greatest Idea Ever?
