Let me summarize where we are today in design thinking. In the past couple of weeks, I have been spending a fair amount of time on investigating design thinking. This is part one of my thoughts that came out of investigating and researching design thinking in the past couple of weeks. Within two posts, I want to provide my outcomes, bridging the present and pointing towards a better design thinking future, in my opinion urgently needed.

Inexperience in: the kind of divergent thinking necessary to innovate, in specific meeting behaviors and facilitation skills, and in innovation process, approaches and frameworks. But none of them, or all of them together, are enough to overcome untrained thinking, poor session facilitation, and an un-anchored or non-existent innovation approach. Yes, you can train people in creative thinking, Front-End-of-Innovation (FEI) frameworks, and in meeting facilitation.

Creative Thinking Can Be Trained. Train Creativity First, Innovation Next . I’m also a bit weary of chasing or developing the latest, greatest, and most sophisticated tool for ideation. I think I need the mental equivalent of a shot of wheatgrass. My new message about innovation is — get back to basics first — and that means the spark of it all, creativity. But without creative belief and culture, advanced tools are likely to fail.

When we are designing innovation for the future, the search is even more centered around strategically connected value creation. The task of searching to resolve more complex problems allows Design Thinking to step up and become a far more visible component on how we can go about this. Design thinking needs to work in harmony with many other thinking skills to make its contribution. Design Thinking is increasing its role in innovation thinking.
