Ideas are still needed to fill pipelines! There is not enough mental preparation done with participants before brainstorming/idea generation sessions. Start thinking of idea generation as a project that takes a few weeks, not a one day session. Fresh combinations of concepts are what creates breakthrough ideas. If you ask for innovation ideas in an idea campaign, make it clear to all that the effort has top level support. Be prepared to process a lot of ideas. Provide feedback, as you go, to the ideation, steer it a bit. Ask for more ideas of certain kinds, less of others, etc. If necessary, modify your question to make it more specific if you’re not getting interesting ideas. Once done and the ideas are processed, communicate what happened.

Make sure you have a focused challenge, and make sure you’ve got resources (people in an ad hoc team) to take the best ideas forward — in a project.
