Earlier today I saw a video highlighting the difficult boot camp style training that cadets looking to enter the U.S. Coast Guard have to undergo. This video reminded me of the movie Full Metal Jacket and the unforgettable scene of “maggots” getting yelled at until they shaped up. Which reminded me that I wanted to write about the Full Metal Jacket, a new clothing option specifically designed for the unprecedented times we find ourselves living in. Times that apparently require us to wear metallic clothing made of copper.
As Yanko Design puts it, “Behold the Full Metal Jacket… No really, this jacket from Vollebak is actually made from a germ-repelling metallic textile. Quite unlike those space-foil jackets that astronauts wear, the Full Metal Jacket actually uses a fabric with woven strands of copper, so it’s entirely breathable, flexible, and doesn’t make a crinkly sound when you move around. With as much as 11 kilometers of copper in each jacket, the apparel relies on copper’s innate ability to kill off any bacteria or viruses that it comes in contact with.”
The anti-microbial properties of copper have been touted far and wide since the coronavirus global pandemic started. Door knobs used to be made of copper for this very reason, until they feel out of style and were replaced by cheaper and more stylish designs. But COVID-19 will likely reverse that trend while also introducing copper into our lives in other ways. Such as copper masks. And now copper clothing.
At this rate, the Full Metal Jacket is likely just the start of a new trend, one in which we aim to protect our entire bodies, not just our faces when we leave our homes to pick up food or run errands. After all, if we’re going to take extra precautions we might as well look good doing it.
Is the Full Metal Jacket the Greatest Idea Ever?
