How To Organically Grow Your TikTok Followers

If you’ve ever had a TikTok video go viral – or simply had one that’s found an audience beyond your usual viewers – then you know the adrenaline rush that comes as part of getting new followers. Seeing the count go up and knowing there’s one more person who’s going to watch your content when it comes out is a rush, so it stands to reason that when you’re building your profile on TikTok, you should want to amass as many followers as possible. Happily, getting more followers is also a great way to become more famous and well-known on TikTok. Here’s how you can organically grow your TikTok follower count.

Post often and at the right times

One of the best ways to get yourself free followers on TikTok is to post at the right times of day. These times will vary depending on where you are, but they tend to be when most users are logging in and checking their feeds, so they’re more likely to spot content you’re uploading. In the UK, these times are a little strange.

  • Monday at 6am, 10am, and 10pm
  • Tuesday at 2am, 4am, and 9am
  • Wednesday at 7am, 8am, and 11pm
  • Thursday at 9am, 12pm, and 7pm
  • Friday at 5am, 1pm, and 3pm
  • Saturday at 11am, 7pm, and 8pm
  • Sunday at 7am, 8am, and 4pm

As you can see, it’s not easy to predict when the best times will be based on behaviour patterns, but these are the times when TikTok users check their apps. If you want to get more followers, upload your content around these times!

Identify your demographic (it might not be what you think)

Traditionally, there’s been a perception that only younger folks – those who belong to the fabled Gen Z demographic – use TikTok. While it’s true that young people still make up the single majority of the app, there are an increasing amount of older TikTok users, and they’re just as worthy of your content as the younger users are. Think about what kind of content you’re creating and figure out how you can tailor it to your demographic. If you’re aiming at kids, great, but don’t make content for adults that tries to pander to children as well; you’ll just end up with the worst of both worlds.

Hit trends, but watch how long they’ve been around

TikTok as an app is all about seizing the moment. If you don’t manage to grab a trend before it departs – which can happen incredibly quickly – then you may as well not bother making a video themed around it at all. You should also avoid the trends that are gathering traction as mean-spirited or dangerous, because they won’t get you new followers in the long-term; they just might result in you being banned or suspended, so it’s not worth it. However, if you see a trend that’s just starting and that has amazing growth potential, you need to get in on the ground floor right away.

Post educational content

Posting educational TikTok videos is a great way to disseminate your content. People will share your videos if they think there’s something useful in them that other people should know. Think about your skill set. Is there something you could teach others to do? Is there a particularly difficult skill that you possess that you think others should possess? If not skills, then think about knowledge. Do you know about something that others don’t, and should? If so, that’s a great basis for your educational TikTok video. Either way, tutorials are an excellent way to engage users and thereby increase your follower count.

Collaborate

It stands to reason that if you make a TikTok video with another user, then both of your follower counts will go up. This is because your loyal followers will discover your collaborator’s content, and their followers will find yours. When you collaborate with another user, you need to make sure that your aesthetics and demographics gel well; if you don’t, you may have a clash on your hands, which could lead to follower counts dropping if they think you aren’t respecting what they want. Be careful with your collaborations, but reach out to users on a similar level to you.

Use Duets and Stitches

TikTok has built-in features that make collaborations with other users easy. If you see another user’s video and you think you can add a unique outlook or a creative followup, then use Duets or Stitches. You’ve probably seen both of these in action; Duets allow you to play your video side-by-side with another user’s, while Stitches let you edit in segments to create a more free-flowing narrative. Make sure you’re using the right format for the video; in the wrong context, Stitches and Duets can look wrong and actually make the content worse, which isn’t going to get you new followers!

Leverage other social media platforms

Have you ever seen a TikTok montage on Facebook or Instagram, or seen someone link to a TikTok video on Twitter? There’s a good reason for that; posting your TikTok video on other platforms lets users who might not be familiar with TikTok discover your work. The unique differences between TikTok and other platforms mean you’ll never be repeating yourself when you post. Instead, you’ll be exposing people who may never have known about you to your TikTok profile, thus driving up your follower count as people are inspired to download the app and follow you for more updates.
