You might think that it would be fun to float around in mid air while on board a space station. And yes, it sure would be. But that lack of gravity is actually a bad thing, wrecking havoc on the human body. Thankfully, there may soon be something that we could do about it.
Futurism explains:
“Previous research has shown that weightlessness can lead to muscle atrophy and even lead to blood fluid pooling around and squishing their brains.
To counteract these dangers, a team of researchers built a ‘mobile gravity suit’ that applies negative pressure to the lower extremities, shifting blood there. The idea is to generate ‘ground reaction force,’ or the force exerted by the ground on a body in contact with it, in order to ensure that muscle and bone density aren’t affected by microgravity.”
This is a great idea. Just because gravity isn’t there doesn’t mean that we can’t simulate its effects in other ways. And if this method is proven successful it could pave the way for humans being able to live longer in space and travel farther. A new era of space exploration may be upon us.
