Virgin just invested in new supersonic jets which travel faster than Concorde

Idea to Value

Virgin will partner with Boom to buy 10 of its new supersonic aircraft, with ticket prices about the same as current business class. These innovative planes would be faster than the decommissioned Concorde service, able to fly from London to New York in about 3.4 hours, yet would be cheap enough to run that they would be economically competitive with normal airlines taking more than twice as long.

There's very little luck in innovation

Jeffrey Phillips

My good friend Paul Hobcraft wrote a nice piece recently about how corporations seem to experience innovation. He compared it to the game of snakes and ladders. In this country (the US) we recognize it as chutes and ladders, a game that allows a player to progress quickly if they land on a ladder, and regress quickly if they land on a chute. Paul notes that corporate innovation seems to reflect this experience, sometimes rapidly progressing, then just as rapidly relapsing.

Crowdsourcing needs dedicated focus to yield great results

HYPE Innovation

The goal is to move the crowd towards a new direction in our collective thinking to solve a problem. Whatever you call crowdsourcing and there are many suggestions, the fact is that many communities are coming together, happening on-line, forming around challenges, ideas, projects, non-profits, people and important social and business issues. They are truly organic, feeding off all the contributions.

Peak Performance: Continuous Testing & Evaluation of LLM-Based Applications

Speaker: Aarushi Kansal, AI Leader & Author and Tony Karrer, Founder & CTO at Aggregage

Software leaders who are building applications based on Large Language Models (LLMs) often find it a challenge to achieve reliability. It’s no surprise given the non-deterministic nature of LLMs. To effectively create reliable LLM-based (often with RAG) applications, extensive testing and evaluation processes are crucial. This often ends up involving meticulous adjustments to prompts.

Shell Gamechanger – A Supertanker of Innovation

Destination Innovation

The Shell Gamechanger initiative was launched in 1996. Its mission was to deliver innovative options that have the potential to drastically impact the energy future. In 1999, Gary Hamel commented, ‘The Gamechanger programme is still fragile. The 1998 slump in oil prices threw Shell into a frenzy of cost cutting. Whether Gamechanger will survive in its current form remains to be seen.

Where Does Advantage Come From in the Social Era?

Tim Kastelle

Every day we hear about traditional industries being disrupted, about great new ideas that are creating growth, and about changes to the way we work. It sure seems as though the nature of business is changing these days. But is it, really? It turns out the answer is yes. I’ve done some research with Nilofer Merchant and Martie-Louise Verreynne looking at where advantage comes from now that we’re in the social era.

The gulf between innovation goals and execution

Jeffrey Phillips

Accenture has recently published an innovation survey of 500 executives in the US. I'm particularly partial to portions of this survey because the authors identify a real and growing problem - the gap between what executives want from innovation, and the organization's ability to deliver. By now everyone knows that innovation is a top three priority for executives.

Experimenting with change before it happens

HYPE Innovation

The value of experiments for innovation is a topic we’ve previously covered here on the blog, and for good reason: if done well, experiments can help avoid some costly new product, service, process, and even business model mistakes. We’ve also written extensively about change , because managing innovation is nothing more than managing transitions and transformation s of all parties involved: customers, suppliers, internal stakeholders and even competition.

When Something Unexpected Happens, Get Curious

Destination Innovation

We often treat an unexpected or surprising happening as an irritation or distraction. It delays us from getting on the with job so we quickly work around it. But sometimes it pays to step back and ponder the meaning of what serendipity has just handed us. Consider these four unexpected occurrences. 1. In 1928 a Scottish bacteriologist returned from his vacation to find that one of his petri dishes had a strange mold growing in it. 2.

How Mature Companies Are Scaling Transformational New Businesses

Scaling transformational innovations in large companies is challenging due to ‘Company Fit’ issues, which arise when the resources, processes, and priorities (RPPs) of the core business are not aligned with the needs of the new business. Many companies have learned how ambidexterity—the ability to both ‘exploit the present and explore the future,’ can help them address these issues for ideation and incubation of new innovations, but scaling transformative business innovations remains a challenge

Closing the innovation leadership gap

Paul Hobcraft

We cannot get away from the reality that in most of our organizations we have a disconnect going on around innovation. Research shows a lack of engagement in non-managers, also there are claims through studies that 7 out of 10 of employees do not understand how they can make a worthwhile contribution. The cynicism around innovation has turned it into nothing more than a buzzword for many, not taken with the seriousness that it really deserves for sustaining growth within organizations.

As a result, one third of suggestions which could improve business ROI never even make it to the boardroom.”.
