The coronavirus grounded the world to a halt and ruined everyone’s lives. But it was also a driving force for incredible innovation. Such as:
Virtual Fashion Show: Who needs models and a room full of people when you can host a virtual fashion show and have the outfits walk themselves down the runway.
Hygiene Hand: If you touch something you should wash your hand or use hand sanitizer. Or better yet use this multi-tool and don’t touch anything ever again.
Speaking of hand sanitizer….there was also a Spider-Man inspired wearable that would shoot sanitizer onto your hand the way Peter Parker would shoot webs.
The Cuisine Curtain:
I get the desire to want to eat out right now. I really do. But what I don’t understand is the logistics. Wearing a mask while walking through the lobby of the restaurant…even wearing a mask while looking at the menu…just to turn around and take off your mask once your food arrives! It doesn’t make any sense! If you want to eat at that restaurant, do yourself a favor, and just order takeout. Or wear a Cuisine Curtain!
Created by Vermont based inventor Matt Benedetto, the Cuisine Curtain is the perfect way to eat out during a global pandemic, keeping your nostrils plugged and your mouth covered, while still allowing you to sneak food in underneath. Something that you could never do while wearing a mask.
Mask Gun: See someone not wearing a mask? Shoot one onto their face! At least that’s YouTuber’s Allen Pan’s approach.
Corning Guardiant: Glass maker Corning a new copper like coating that can be added to glass surfaces, such as smartphones screens to make them impervious to COVID-19 and other germs. The perfect solution to today’s #1 problem.
Full Metal Jacket: Speaking of copper you can gain further protection from COVID by wearing a metallic jacket made from everyone’s new favorite material.
Bacteria Mask: In just a few short months we’ve already seen a ton of new innovations relating to masks. There have been masks made with built in sensors capable of detecting the coronavirus and better yet masks designed to actually destroy the coronavirus on contact. 3-D printed masks that get customized to the exact contours of a person’s face now exist as do masks that let us still use Face ID to unlock our phones. There have even been subtle homegrown changes like masks with mouth windows that let the deaf community continue to read lips. But my favorite mask design is one that doesn’t exist yet but soon will. A mask made of bacteria!
Micrashell: Clearly it’s not all that realistic or practical to be walking around all the time in a full hazmat suit. What we really need is something more convenient. Something that would still provide us with full range of motion and the ability to lead a somewhat normal life. Or at least have some fun every once and a while. That’s where Micrashell, a suit specifically designed for nightlife and entertainment, comes into play.
Wearable Tents: As a kid I used to love playing in tents which is why I’m a big fan of the idea of wearing a tent wherever I go from now on to help keep me safe.
Cuddle Curtains: I previously wrote about Skin Hunger, the very real desire for human contact that sets in when we’ve been deprived of human touch for too long. It may sound funny but it’s a very real condition and it’s something that a lot of us have been experiencing as we quarantine for months at a time with no end in sight.
Thankfully there may be a solution in the works that will let us hug again: cuddle curtains!
Food Ordering Mask: When you think of wearing something at Burger King the first thing that usually comes to mind is one of those crown hats. But soon you may find yourself wearing something else: a mask that displays your order.
Coronavirus Killing Cars: Thanks to Ford you car may soon be able to protect you from COVID-19 by heating itself up to a level high enough to kill any coronavirus particles that you may have dragged onto its surfaces.
Window Swapping: Need of change of scenery? You can now try looking out someone else’s window to get a different view thanks to Window Swap.
Icelandic Screaming: I feel like screaming. Luckily for me there’s now a way to scream in style, thanks to a new website from Iceland’s tourism board that lets you record your greatest primal yell and then pump the noise out into the country’s vast wilderness at one of seven majestic locations.
Anti-Face Touching Wearable: It’s been said that people have a general tendency to touch their faces anywhere from 10-20 times per hour. Mostly these take the form of sub-conscious actions that we’re not even aware we’re undertaking. Such as rubbing our chins while thinking about a perplexing problem or having a general predisposition to adjusting our glasses or playing with our facial hair on a consistent basis.
Obviously, these are bad habits that increase the likelihood of infections spreading, something that is especially troubling during a global pandemic. Thankfully, there may be help on the way in the form of a new wearable device, currently being developed by an Indian teenager, that would buzz at us when we undertake actions that are currently frowned upon, such as touching our faces or shaking hands.
It’s such a great idea that even NASA made one as well, the PULSE necklace..
iSphere: We may soon have an alternative to wearing masks: wearing a fishbowl! It may sound silly but this is an actual design in the works, inspired by a retro futuristic 1950s sci-fi vibe.
Are any of these COVID inspired innovations the Greatest Idea Ever?
