I had a weird dream last night. You could even call it a nightmare. A strange unfolding of events where I was sneaking around a friend’s house late at night, trying not to get caught, in a scenario that seemed all too real. I’m not even sure I was actually asleep. One of those weird nights where I was kind of lying in bed, half awake, half in a dream state, having a fever dream of sorts despite not having a temperature.
Thankfully, this was a one time occurrence. My dreams, as weird and action-packed as they often are, with me usually looking for something or trying to get somewhere, don’t normally get classified as prototypical nightmares. But others aren’t so lucky. Many people suffer from nightmares and night terrors on a nightly basis.
I can’t even imagine what that must feel like. It’s hard enough for me to fall asleep. Actually being afraid to drift off out of fear of what I may encounter in the deep recesses of my subconscious would almost be too much for me to bear. But thankfully there is now a solution for those who battle themselves: a new FDA approved Apple watch app that gently nudges you awake when an encounter with a nightmare is detected.
According to New Atlas:
“The NightWare system is essentially a sophisticated app that works with an Apple Watch and linked smartphone, and initially spends up to 10 nights learning a user’s sleep patterns. Once a unique sleep profile has been created, the system tracks heart rate and body movement data to detect when a user is experiencing a nightmare. If a nightmare is detected the system triggers mild vibrations through the Apple Watch that are designed to gently disrupt the nightmare without waking the user.”
This is great news for victims of sexual trauma, people suffering from PTSD, or anyone else who suffers from nightmares. As for me, let’s just hope that its all rainbows and butterflies from here on out.
