The most common innovation project failures

Jeffrey Phillips

I had the opportunity to speak to a leadership team that is considering building an innovation capability in their business. I was asked a question I get infrequently, but one I enjoy answering. The question is: what keeps businesses from innovating effectively? The answer that I think most leadership teams want is: good ideas. After all, it's easier to explain away the lack of innovation if you can say that most teams lack good ideas.

The sharks that prey are arriving a lot earlier now

Paul Hobcraft

Change is all around us, it is accelerating not abating. Do you feel you are trapped, encircled and just a little concerned. You often hear of volatile trading conditions, a more complex market and situations changing constantly and moving faster than ever. ‘Much’ seems to be closing in on us. We do know we need to re-equip ourselves for constant disruption; we are really beginning to see a shift from the classic bell curve into more of a shark fin for adopting change.

Scaling transformational innovations in large companies is challenging due to ‘Company Fit’ issues, which arise when the resources, processes, and priorities (RPPs) of the core business are not aligned with the needs of the new business. Many companies have learned how ambidexterity—the ability to both ‘exploit the present and explore the future,’ can help them address these issues for ideation and incubation of new innovations, but scaling transformative business innovations remains a challenge

Sufficiency as the ultimate business strategy for sustainability?

Norbert Bol

When companies are innovating for sustainability there are different strategies that can be pursued. In general these strategies aim to create positive benefits and/or to reduce negative impacts for society and nature. However all economic business models are still based on the stimulation of consumption. In a sufficiency-based approach however an alternative approach is taken to doing business as it is seeking to reduce or moderate consumption in addition to other sustainability strategies.
