Prepare yourselves for one of the biggest buzzwords of 2019: 5G. That’s right. 4G will soon be a thing of the past, replaced by blazing fast wi-fi speeds, up to 20x faster than today’s standards. And the revolution has already begun.
As AT&T reports on their website:
“Our standards-based mobile 5G network is live today in parts of 12 cities: Atlanta, Charlotte, N.C., Dallas, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Fla., Louisville, Ky., Oklahoma City, New Orleans, Raleigh, N.C., San Antonio and Waco, Texas.
In the first half of 2019 we plan to deploy mobile 5G in parts of these 7 additional cities: Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego, San Francisco and San Jose…”
Of course, living in one of those cities is just half the battle. You’d also need a 5G compatible device. Which won’t be cheap. But may ultimately be worth the upgrade. For a myriad of reasons.
As USA Today puts it, “Smartphones are just one small piece of the 5G revolution. The blazing-fast speeds on our phones will be enjoyable, but the real future of 5G is in connecting all the pieces of our world together. Self-driving cars could talk to each other, making them safer and more reliable. Augmented-reality glasses could give us a new way of looking at the world around us.
We’re getting closer to a more exciting sci-fi-style future, and the seeds for that will be planted as 5G expands into reality in 2019 and then ramps up in 2020. In a decade, we may look back and marvel at how it all began.”
And marvel is likely what we’ll be doing as our entire world, from our phones to our Internet of Things connect devices, all get powered by this amazing new technology.
Is 5G the Greatest Idea Ever?
