GroupMe, a group messaging app, began as a hackathon project at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in 2010. Likewise the software company Nitobi began as a project at the iPhoneDevCamp in 2008. Community and shared purpose bring motivation and courage for innovation. Some major companies were in fact born from these hackathons.
