At BMI Lab we wanted to learn how they did it, so we travelled to China with some clients, visiting companies, factories, labs and universities to find the recipe for the secret sauce of Chinese innovation. From just $12 billion in 2011–13, or 6 percent of the global total, to $77 billion in 2014–16, or 19 percent of the worldwide total.
