I recently ran into an article (Walrave et al 2011) that analyzed a simulation of investing in exploration vs. exploitation. In this strategy companies focus on social innovation, entrepreneurship, ideation and technology. No need to invest a lot of resources in exploration, but no need to invest in exploitation as well.
