I say ‘Leading FOR Innovation’ instead of the usual narrative of ‘Innovation Leadership’ because it’s not about making the leaders themselves ‘innovative’ but about leaders being able to build and lead an organisation where genuine innovation (not innovation theatre!)

There is this increasing need to understand and incorporate ecosystems, platforms, and the greater use of analytics, big data and reliance on technology into our innovation thinking. Our leadership really does a poor job of providing a compelling innovation vision. We are back to the ‘chicken and the egg’ again.

This often manifests itself in the host of variations in what are claimed as their ‘unique’ versions of “common innovation” where they constantly reinvent the wheel in their own approaches to processes, definitions, tools, frameworks, systems of working and idea management etc. Also innovation itself is going through really a massive change.

Appointing Outpost leadership as a temporary assignment leads to weak relations between the innovation ecosystem and the Innovation Outpost and increases the risk of failure. Do we have an initial definition of the solution, have gotten out of the building and validated product/market fit and have a first pass of a validated business model?
