Janet Clarey and I ran an afternoon workshop on getting a jumpstart with social media where we showed people how to use the conference tags and wiki, Twitter, Delicious, RSS etc. Although most were reading blogs, none maintains one--lack of time seems to be the biggest factor. Yesterday we did our pre-conference sessions.

In that same window, one of my most valued mentors introduced me at lunch as a Novelist. You can go online and look up all the different uses of Writer vs Author vs Novelist vs. Schmuck Who Types and Prays for Good Reviews and Modest Royalties (that last one is harder to find in search, so I think I’ll tag it). That was weird.

Goodwin noted that if everyone in the audience mentored just one or two people, our community would grow exponentially and we would all become better at our craft. Both the mentor and the mentee have much to learn from one another, and that passing of the torch symbolizes, and ensures, the longevity of our profession.
