Open innovation resurgence during COVID. Why?

Jeffrey Phillips

There's been a resurgence lately in the concept of open innovation. I'm not quite sure why open innovation as a concept has received more press and more attention lately. It's not as though we have new open innovation methods or mechanisms, or that open innovation has demonstrated more effective outcomes. Rather, I think, open innovation becomes interesting when we are distributed and looking for new ways of working.

The Challenges being Faced by Innovation Consultants

Paul Hobcraft

From my perspective I’ve been looking at a real challenge today, that many consultants offering innovation services are not providing real sustaining consulting value to clients, only ad-hoc services. In many ways, the consulting industry specializing in innovation is its own worst enemy. Innovation solutions simply need to be crafted in my opinion. Bespoke needs to be recognized as necessary for innovation solutions.

To accelerate innovation, focus on culture

Jeffrey Phillips

There's an old joke about perspective and laziness I love and have used before on this blog, because it illustrates many of the challenges (and opportunities) of corporate innovation. This analogy aligns so well to what corporate America does when it comes to a focus on innovation - intent discovery on things that don't matter, while purposefully ignoring the factors that must change to make innovation successful.

Putting Brainstorming in its place

Jeffrey Phillips

I find that I've become increasingly irritated with all of the narrow interpretations and self-serving definitions of what is, or isn't, innovation. I'm happy to climb up on a soapbox again to talk about one of the most common scapegoats for innovation, the act of brainstorming. Strange that the activity that should be the easiest, most natural activity in an innovation process is singled out as the most complex, difficult and dangerous.

Is your company just performing “Innovation Theatre”?

Idea to Value

Most companies say that they are investing in innovation. They will showcase large initiatives for gaining ideas and suggestions from across the organisation. They will point to their last brainstorming session and say how successful it was, how it produced hundreds of ideas (or at least post it notes). And they will proudly announce to their shareholders: Look at all the innovation we are doing! None of this is actual innovation. What is innovation theatre?

Exploring frameworks and methods you need to know as an Innovator

Paul Hobcraft

Recently, well actually, over the past twelve or eighteen months, I was asked to explore and explain different frameworks that the innovator might need to know or at least have an opinion upon. Why you should work with an innovation consultant

Jeffrey Phillips

I'm an innovation consultant. I've been working in the innovation space for over 12 years. I have a somewhat (cough) vested interest in writing a blog post about why you should work with an innovation consultant. The real purpose of this blog is to answer the question: why should I work with an innovation consultant? Trying to innovate with the existing tools and processes will only result in incremental change at best and a really frustrating experience.
