In Defense of Floppy Disks: The Vocabulary of the Interface

Boxes and Arrows

It’s better to have 80% of users see the floppy disk, dig back into their memories of childhood technology and connect to this image as representing the act of saving, than have 100% of users see a downward facing arrow and wonder what it means. I work on interfaces used by college students to search for academic articles. Librarians buy these databases. Librarians happen to be wonderful clients to build products for because they always let you know what they don’t like.

Is the iPad mobile?

Boxes and Arrows

I should have remembered where I was supposed to get off, but, like everyone else, I rely on technology to offload cognitive processes when I should be using my brain. My Android phone died on the train when I was several stops away from my destination. Wait, I thought, I have both my iPad and my laptop in my backpack. I felt ridiculously conspicuous pulling out either just to check Google Maps. Between the two, I chose the iPad. It’s smaller and it has 3G.

A Truly Ambitious Product Idea: Making Stuff for People

Boxes and Arrows

Technology is confusing and doesn’t meet people’s needs. They miss out on all the useful things technology can do for them, lost in a sea of complexity, confusion, and techie-centric functionality. But as technology becomes everyone’s ever-more-constant companion I can think of no greater or more worthy challenge. Technology is meaningless without people; yet, as technologists, we’re prone to forgetting that.

UX One-liners

Boxes and Arrows

As UX adapts to a rapidly shortening cycles of technological–and by proxy, behavioral–change, we need to consider simplicity and conciseness in introducing the rest of our world to not only the products we design, but also the universe in which we create. A little background to start: I’ve had the honor of working as a designer-in-residence for General Assembly’s User Experience Design Immersive Pilot Program (UXDI) from June through July.

Evolving a Creative Workplace: Step 5

Boxes and Arrows

When more and more of the staff were requesting to attend industry and technology conferences, we looked to combine their drive for learning with our drive for knowledge sharing. In this ongoing discussion about growing creative teams organically, I’ve shared how to prepare your organization for successful expansion, how to plant the right elements into the mix, how to “ water ” for sustainable growth, and then how adding fertilizer can take your group’s motivation to the next level.

The Distant Summit of Enterprise Design

Boxes and Arrows

Basically, all human endeavors have reached a level of scale and complexity that makes them interdependent on an ecosystem of interrelated organizations and technology.” (p18). As @mikeatherton said at UX Cambridge 2013 “Content is the whole damned point” and so should exist beyond service to design or brand messaging. Morgan Kaufman 2013. Lately, I have been fascinated by mountain climbing. I am reading every book that I can find on the subject.

Technology Created

How relevant is a world where technology was so weak, so non-integrated? What about a student of technology? For example, why does it consistently seem to be true that “Dominant incumbent firms, long successful in an existing technology, are often much less successful in new technological eras.”[4] That’s all well and good but how about a macro perspective on technological eras and understanding where in the cycle we stand?

Digital Factory

Technology Created

Being a technology consultant is a fabulous job. We’re brought in to amazing companies to understand their business models and, by applying technology solutions, we facilitate solving the challenges they face on a day to day basis. We could be building a custom solution tying together legacy systems and applying new technologies and techniques but the end result is something we’ve built and delivered.

Innovating When Opportunity Knocks

It’s also about timing, effectiveness, innovation and using the right blend of technology to address the specific problem space. Their campaigns aren’t working, their systems have lost effectiveness or they simply need a new mobile app: they need a new technology solution. Simply Innovate : connect thought leadership with emerging technology. Use the Right Technology : integrate existing and emerging technology stacks to solve the problem.

The General Stakeholder Interview

Boxes and Arrows

Some stakeholders will answer you with an impenetrable wall of buzzwords: “It’s a distributed, service-model three-tier architecture that will leverage existing technology,” and so forth. This is an excerpt from from Kim Goodwin’s excellent Designing for the Digital Age. It is quite long, so we’ve broken it into several sections. Many thanks to Ms. Goodwin and Wiley for allowing us to share this with our readers. Understanding the Business. The General Stakeholder Interview.

Innovation Debt

Technology Created

Essentially, Innovation Debt is the cost you’ll be accumulating if you’re not investing in creating and building compelling and distinct solutions and competencies that don’t just tap into existing best practices but that are constantly looking ahead for what’s next, for the emerging technologies, techniques and practices that will have your company on the front edge of growth and innovation. “Learning and innovation go hand in hand.

The Engineering Stakeholder Interview

Boxes and Arrows

The focus and length of engineering interviews differs quite a bit between a new product and a revision of an existing one; in the first case, there is more room for the design to drive the technology, while in the second, the capabilities of the existing technology, when combined with the project budget and timeline, may introduce significant design limitations. This is an excerpt from from Kim Goodwin’s excellent Designing for the Digital Age.

How Fragile Is a Brand?

Apple has always promised us humanity above technology, so when they even mildly violate that promise we feel it, because we have come to trust them so much. Apple unveiled a bunch of new products last week, including numerous options in shape, size, and price point for a fuller line of iPads. Many of these products are desirable and will make great holiday gifts, but none comes close to pioneering a new category of experience.

The Benefits of Open Innovation

One of the greatest benefits of open innovation is the ability to find and groom innovators who already have products and technologies. This is because even those in a corporation hired to work on technological and product innovations rarely have as much time to do the work they were hired to do. Open innovation is the life blood of many corporations. Instead of relying only on the capital and assets within the company, they can tap into the immeasurable assets if the entire world.

Crowdsourcing the mind through open innovation

We have technology so advanced that we can search the world and give us the answers we desire in milliseconds, but what if the answers aren’t available yet? We have search engine technology that enables us to search text, images, video and even shapes. Yet if we want to find out something that someone else may know but they haven’t done anything about it, we can’t search the answer.

What is Innovation Management?

By networking with others on the inside and outside of an organization, companies can make use of a diversity of technologies to create products that can change the face or the course of an industry. What is innovation management? What is Innovation Management? With the life cycle of products becoming increasingly shorter today, innovation management is essential to companies that want to stay on the cutting edge of their industries.

Social innovation

We live in a world that literally changes by the minute, with new technology and ideas launched on a daily basis. Each of us has our own little problems but these tend to pale in comparison to the needs of society as a whole. Change can be a good thing, but when it happens, it’s important that they are developed in a way that is for the greater good of the entire community. This is where social innovation comes into play to make sure that it happens.

A new paradigm: focusing on Work to be Done

Paul Hobcraft

As we gain more understanding of what automation and information technology can give us we can channel that “data-driven innovation” (DDI) in different, new ways. Paul Hobcraft

This started my questioning of the Business model, back in 2013. It still will be based on the four pillars suggested in Rick’s article: 1) Committed and Engaged Leadership, 2) Comprehensive Innovation Strategy, 3) Sustained Mindset Shift and 4) Comprehensive Tool Kit that will be built out on a far more dynamic foundation, with technology and network effects as critical within any future design, not single entity and product design.

Innovation in the Automotive Industry

The automotive industry is undergoing massive technological and social change. Automotive manufacturers, companies in the automotive supply chain, and technology startups eyeing the automotive market need to understand the innovations that are taking place today – and those that will take place tomorrow.
