These large mills did everything from reacting iron ore, coke, and limestone in blast furnaces to rolling finished products at the other end. Unlike their giant predecessors that needed large blast furnaces to process raw ore, minimills made new steel products by melting scrap steel using a new technology called the electric arc furnace.
