Because nothing like it had existed before they had to advertise it – but menstruation was a taboo subject. They advertised in women’s magazines such as Good Housekeeping with the slogan ‘Kotex – Ask for it by Name.’ Even so, prudishness was a major obstacle to the promotion of the product.
